The No-Nos Of Fruit Combinations - Essential Rules to Remember

Fruit bowls and smoothies are tempting, but Ayurveda encourages a simple rule: "eat them alone or leave them alone." If you frequently experience bloating and digestive issues, this uncomplicated hack may be the solution you need.
The No-Nos Of Fruit Combinations - Essential Rules to Remember

As for milkshakes with regular dairy milk, there are some exceptions to the rules:

  • Acceptable combinations with dairy: dates, dried fruits, avocado, sweet mango, and other sweet fruits (acceptable but not the best for digestion).

  • Incompatible: Banana, sour fruits, or fruits in general. General Fruit Rules to

Some Fruit Rules to Bookmark:

No Vegetable + Fruits in Salads:Different digestion times call for separate consumption.

  • No Animal Dairy & Fruit (Plant Milk Is Acceptable): Combining animal dairy with fruit slows down digestion due to fruit acids interfering with carbohydrate digestion, promoting fermentation in the intestines, leading to bloating and indigestion.

  • Have Mono/Singular Fruits: Each fruit contains a unique set of enzymes. Eating a single fruit allows your body to focus on digesting and extracting the maximum nutrients from that fruit.

  • Seasonal and Local Fruits: Opt for seasonal and local fruits over imported varieties. Eating in-season is a smart choice.

  • Don't Have Fruits When You're Down/Cold: Fruits are naturally cooling, so consuming warmer foods is preferable when you're feeling under the weather. However, pomegranate and papaya may be consumed after a few days of recovery from a cold.

  • Never Have Fruits as a Dessert/After a Meal: Fruits are the quickest to digest, which means they ferment in your body while waiting for the rest of your meal to digest.

  • Don’t Keep Your Fruit Cut for a Long Time: In fruits like apples you can see that they turn brown after leaving them cut, this means they are oxidizing, and in common language means they are losing nutrients. It's still safe to consume but not at its full nutritional value. So, grab a fresh one for the benefits!

For Fruit Bowls, These Combinations Work Well:

  • All types of berries together.

  • Sweet fruits.

  • Citrus fruits.

  • Melons, always by themselves (don't even mix muskmelon and watermelon).

  • Apples & pears.

How Long Should You Wait Before Consuming Fruits After a Meal?

It's advisable to wait 3-4 hours after a meal to have fruits. For instance, if you've had lunch at 1 PM, enjoy fruits from 4 PM onwards.

Can You Eat a Meal After Fruits?

Wait 1-2 hours for the fruit to digest before having a meal. For example, if you eat a fruit at 9 AM, wait until 10-11 AM to have a meal.

You can mix dried fruits with fruits, it is advisable to keep a gap before having vegetables.
